Erik Kessels

Make more sense with nonsense

Erik Kessels

Make more sense with nonsense

The human brain is hard wired to try to make sense of everything around us, and that’s why people remember what they don’t understand: You won’t remember the hundreds of people you saw today wearing suits or jeans. But I bet you’ll remember the guy in the train wearing a chicken suit, while reading a vegetarian cookbook. At Vuoden Huiput Festival Erik Kessels will talk about his practice as a communicator and a visual artist and how making nonsense and mistakes plays a big role in his work.

Erik Kessels is a Dutch artist, designer and curator with great interest in photography. Since 1996, Kessels is the Creative Director of communications agency KesselsKramer, known for its quirky, inventive and unconventional style. The agency’s client includes national and international names such as Nike, Diesel, J&B Whisky, Oxfam, Ben, Vitra, Citizen M and The Hans Brinker Budget Hotel.

As an artist and photography curator Kessels has published over 50 books of his 're-appropriated' images and curated many exhibitions, such as 24HRS of Photos. In 2010 Kessels was awarded with the Amsterdam Prize of the Arts, and in 2012 he was elected the most influential creative of Netherlands.

5 Steps to Change Your Note-Taking

Do you take notes at conferences, meetings, in class or to capture your own thoughts? How often do you look back at your notes, how useful are them to review the material and how easy is it to find a particular piece of information when you are looking for it? In this talk, designer, illustrator and visual thinker Eva-Lotta Lamm will share her approach of taking visual notes – also called sketchnotes. She will guide you through 5 steps that lead you from regular written notes to a more structured, visual and engaging way of mapping out information.

This is a hands-on session for everybody to sketch along, have fun and pick up the 5 basic principles of sketchnoting by trying them out themselves during the talk. If you think you are rubbish at sketching, never go back through your notes and want to get a fun kick-start into using pen and paper, this session will be just right for you. Get your pens ready!

Eva-Lotta is a sought after expert and teacher in the area of sketching, sketchnoting and visual thinking. She has over 12 years of experience working on digital products as an in-house designer for Google, Skype, and Yahoo! as well as consulting for various agencies and her own clients.
